How the WTA ranking works
A player’s ranking points are the total of their results over the last 52 weeks. Each result counts for a year and then drops off, usually when the same tournament comes round again, so a player who defends a title keeps the points and one who loses early gives most of them back.
The champion of a Grand Slam earns 2,000 points, of a WTA 1000 event 1,000, of a WTA 500 event 500 and of a WTA 250 event 250; the season-ending WTA Finals are worth up to 1,500 to an unbeaten champion. Only a player’s best results count toward the total, and for most players the Grand Slams and the mandatory 1000 events count even when they are skipped.
Official and live rankings
The official WTA ranking is published once a week, on Monday, after the week’s tournaments have finished. The «live» rankings found elsewhere are projections: they add the points from matches finished this week and take off the points due to drop out, so they move during a tournament and settle when the next official list comes out. This page shows the official list.
